The semi-submersible drilling rig was awarded by Caspian Drilling Company (CDC) to two subsidiaries of Keppel offshore & Marine Company with Caspian Rigbuilders and Caspian Shipyard Company (CSC).
Caspian Shipyard Company (CSC) signed a contract with Baku Shipyard LLC for undertaking fabrication of the pontoons and upper blocks for the construction of a semisubmersible drilling rig. Each pontoon’s weight is about 2200 tons; overall, steelwork performed together with upper hull blocks and outfittings is about 5800 tons.
The DSS 38M rig is designed for a drilling depth of up to 40,000 ft (12,192 m) and operations in 1,000 m (3,280 ft) water depth. To withstand high winds speeds in the Caspian Sea. An 800-m (2,625-ft) self-contained eight-point mooring system was installed.
Equipped with well control piping, BOP handling, and foundations rated for 20 000 PSI, the DSSTM 38M are the first shallow water semisubmersible to have the capabilities to perform drilling in expanded areas of operation in the oil fields of Azerbaijan. It can work at a drilling depth of up to 40 000 ft and operations in 1000 m water depth.
Semi-submersible drilling rig, named after Heydar Aliyev, became the first and the only drilling rig in the world with 1400 atmospheres system technology. Its carrying capacity is 5600, and displacement – 47500 tons.
